Case Study: Monsen Engineering
Monsen Engineering Company, based in Fairfield, New Jersey

Challenge
Decision of December 20, 1996: Create a distinctive Web Site, on a limited budget, for an April 1 launch. No April fooling!

Background
Monsen Engineering Co. specializes in HVAC service and maintenance, Design/Build construction and facility automation. Monsen determined that web presence is an increasingly important method of reaching potential clients. In addition, the WWW provides an ideal showcase for Monsen's high-technology offerings.

The Berry Ecke associates Approach
Berry Ecke Associates (BEA)and Monsen began with an analogy comparing web site creation to marketing a restaurant. First, it was necessary to create interest (aromas wafting to passersby). Next, visitors would receive an attractive first impression (decor) and then a solid "menu" filled with information not readily available elsewhere (specialties of the house). Prompt, helpful service would bring visitors back and "word of mouth" would assure success (long lines of curious new customers).

Monsen wanted a crisp, clean look and an easily navigable site. It was important that pages not be copy heavy and compelling graphics were a must! Even before its first meeting with web designers, BEA worked closely with Monsen to chart the course of the proposed site. Careful planning proved essential: From beginning to end, the initial plan provided clear guidelines for negotiating the potential pitfalls of web construction.

BEA interviewed a wide variety of Internet providers before making the decision to partner with Planet Access, a local firm with a record of innovative web site development. BEA created copy and worked with both Monsen and Planet Access technicians to design a handsome site complete with "working parts." And, since this is Monsen's 50th anniversary year, a gold "coin" was designed for the toolbar frame — so that it would appear on every page.

The"Awesome" Results
The site was launched, as planned, on April 1. It came in within budget and is currently receiving raves for ease of navigation, clear messages, creative animation, attractive design and instructive industry information. Mike Weil, Senior Editor, Contracting Business Magazine, describes it as "Awesome." Is it attracting new clients? Careful monitoring is in progress and a Phase II decision will follow.
