Case Study: C.R. Bard, Inc. Challenge To improve two-way communication between management and employees. Background C.R. Bard, Inc., a multinational manufacturer of health care products, had been a small company that fostered a close knit "family feeling" among its employees. But in the 1980s, the company experienced a tremendous surge in growth which strained the lines of communication between management and employees. Occupied with managing the rapid growth of the company, executives became less visible to shop floor employees. As a result, employees did not fully understand changes taking place and began to lose sight of how their role affected the overall company.
After conducting focus groups with Bard employees at seven locations in the United States, Berry Ecke Associates recommended the creation of a corporate-wide employee orientation program to strengthen the lines of communication between management and employees. To attain this goal, we produced an orientation presentation. The program was designed to promote a positive attitude among employees toward the company and the jobs they perform, increase awareness of Bard's corporate history and the businesses Bard is in, and make employees feel more a part of the Bard family. The presentation was also made to be flexible so that managers at each Bard division could personalize their orientation programs to meet local needs. Results After the program was created, 39 tailored presentations were distributed to 14 Bard facilities worldwide. In the short time after their release, results were extremely positive. Follow-up interviews with division personnel managers revealed an increased level of interest in orientation programs in general, driven primarily by the release of the corporate presentation. Most Bard divisions then created their own localized endings to the presentation. The Bard employee orientation presentation won the PRSA New Jersey Chapter's 1991 Pyramid Award for excellence in internal communications. << Back to What We Do |
